A movie based on the true story of Nelson Mandela, ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ has become South Africa’s highest grossing film of all time after it opened last week, the production company Video Vision has confirmed.
The film is based on the 1994 book ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ by anti-apartheid revolutionary and the former South African President Nelson Mandela. The film premiered on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, and it was released on November 29, 2013. It stars Idris Elba, who plays Mandela, and Naomie Harris.
According to reports, Mandela is yet to see it due to his critical but stable health condition.
The producers said the movie has earned an average of $US25, 076 ($A27, 618) per screen.
Positive reviews from both movie critics and enthusiasts alike have trailed the movie. It is predicted to be an Oscar contender, as Elba’s performance in the movie is worthy of a best acting nomination.
Mandela, 95, is currently under medical care at his Johannesburg home after spending nearly three months in the hospital with a lung infection earlier this year.
