A whiz-kid, according to the English Dictionary, is a kid with a stock character; a kid with a specific personality type. Traits include high intelligence, lack of physical strength, being mentally intimidating, knowledge, and confidence. The term ‘whiz kid’ can apply to both males and females. Pictures a nerd with turtle neck and thick eye glasses who is all about maths, calculations or equations and you won’t be too far away from the typical whiz kid. We have a whiz kid in Naija and trust; he is not typical in any way. He is mentally intimidating; he is high on knowledge, intelligence and confidence. That’s where the similarities end. He is the new definition of the word whiz kid; he is a whiz kid with a lot of style and class…Or maybe I should simply say he is the whiz kid with swag. He is a talented singer, songwriter and performer.Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun a.k.a Whizkid kicked off his singing career at the age of eleven when he recorded his first song with one of Nigeria’s celebrated music icons, OJB Jezreel. He went on to record a 7-track album, which he released in his Church in Lagos, under the name, Lil’ Prinz. This was just a stint that earned him a remarkable deal of encouragement and recognition from family, his Church and other artistes.

Years later in 2006, with a new stage name, and a passion for making music and God-given talent, Whizkid got back into the studio to hone his craft. Year 2009, however, would prove to be Whizkid’s break-out year, as his collaboration with M.I on Fast Money, Fast Cars on the Talk About it album drew major attention to his distinct voice, singing style and penchant for great songwriting. People started asking questions about his voice and his fly style. He went on to feature on Kel’s Turn by Turn and many other high profile projects. He also got signed to Banky W’s Empire Mates Entertainment, and featured prominently on Banky’s The W Experience album. The talented and charming young man is enrolled as a full-time student at a private University in Nigeria; and although he only turned 23 this year, he has already achieved so much due to his life’s experiences into incredible music. Whizkid has released many singles, including Holla at your Boy, Gidi Girl, among others.

So when next you see the word whiz-kid anywhere, know that it now has new synonyms; hip hop Prince, Nigeria young hip hop sensation.
