Marley, KWAM 1, Tuface, MI for Felabration

Afro beat King, Femi Kuti, and ragga star, Kymani Marley, son of reggae music legend, Bob Marley, are the top acts for this year’s Felabration festival. Also headlining this annual international festival are Fuji music exponent, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM 1), Tuface Idibia and rap star, MI.

The annual international festival instituted to celebrate the life, times and music of the legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, commences on Monday, October 14, 2013 with a symposium titled ‘Movement of the People: The Fela/Bob Marley Perspective’. Tuesday, October 15, the music segment proper of the festival, which technically started on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 with the Secondary Schools Debate held inside the Freedom Park, Lagos, begins. This year’s debate was won by Oriwu Senior Secondary School, to retain the trophy from last year.

However, Nana Rita Marley, wife of late reggae music superstar, Bob Marley, who had agreed to be the symposium guest speaker, has suddenly taken ill. Reports from her doctors in Ghana indicate that she is indisposed and may have to be on bed rest longer than earlier suggested. If this happens, she will be represented at the event by the head of her foundation.

The music segment of this festival will be held inside the New Afrika Shrine, Ikeja, Lagos. To this extent, very tight security measures have been put in place to protect lives and property of fans.

Apart from the highly efficient Afrika Shrine security, the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) arm of the Lagos State Police Command would be stationed at strategic locations around the venue of the concert.

At a well-attended meeting with the media on Tuesday, October 8, Femi Kuti, who is the organising committee’s head of security, said: “We have gone the extra mile to make sure fans are totally safe and secured.”

As a back-up to the Shrine Security Corps, a local security outfit has also been contracted to man the artiste zone including the stage.

In the morning of Saturday, October 19, 2013, the festival street carnival will hold on the streets of Ikeja, Lagos. This will include street dances from brightly-coloured choreographers and brilliant display by equally colourfully-attired gymnasts performing atop flat bed trucks.

Highpoint of this year’s festival will be the Sunday, October 20, duo performance of the siblings of the protagonists of this year’s theme, Femi Kuti and Kymani Marley, on the same stage.

Fela’s defunct political party was also called Movement of the People and he released a hit track that goes by same name. Bob Marley had a hit track also called, ‘Exodus: Movement of Jah People’.

The marriage of the offsprings of these two icons is therefore to find a synergy in their artistic thought processes.

This year’s Felabration has received huge support from the Lagos State Government, 7Up Bottling Company, Promasidor, Lrg, Karsepreko, Ford Foundation, Nigeria Bottling Company.

Fela, in whose honour the festival was initiated, is the creator of Afrobeat music whose rhythm is the most sampled beat in contemporary music
